Obituary of Marian T. Schlegel

Mrs. Marian T. Schlegel, of Medina, passed away peacefully on New Year’s Day, 2017 at the North Wing Residence at Medina Memorial Hospital at the age of 100. Mrs. Schlegel was born in Medina, December 17, 1916, a daughter of the late Vincent and Genevieve (Mortka) Kiebala. A graduate of Sacred Heart School and Medina High School, class of 1936, she married Alton W. Schlegel in 1943. A lifelong member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, she was a member of the Sacred Heart Rosary Society and the Mother’s Club. She was very proud of her Polish heritage, her church and her small Village of Medina community where she spent most of her life. She had the distinction of residing on Commercial Street in Medina for close to ninety five years, in three different houses on the street. Mrs. Schlegel was employed by the H.J. Heinz Company and seasonally at Birdseye Frozen Foods and Monroe Frozen Foods. She enjoyed walking around her beloved Village of Medina, reading Amish literature, baking, and cooking, especially Polish dishes, watching her favorite TV shows, such as her soap opera, Lawrence Welk, Jeopardy and The Waltons. She also enjoyed craft shows and word searches. She loved trips to the Adirondack Mountains for weekly stays in the beautiful forested areas. She loved family get togethers especially the annual Kiebala Family Reunions, and yearly fall trips to Letchworth State Park. Marian really enjoyed shopping sprees to Easter Hills Mall with her daughter. She loved watching the Buffalo Bills with her daughters Marian was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, and was an active member of the Senior Citizens of Western Orleans. Marian was a wonderful and beloved mother and grandmother. She was a great cook and baker in earlier days and will be remembered for her ethnic Polish dishes. She was known for her friendliness, kind heart, generosity and extreme love for her family. Survivors include her daughters, Maxine M. Butler of Warsaw and Darlene M. (Robert E.) Gerke of Oakfield; grandson, Robert E. Gerke, Jr. of Stratford, New Jersey; her beloved grandpets, Katy and Buddy; several cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Alton on Dec. 22, 1984; and brothers, Stanley, Edwin, Arthur and Leopold Kiebala and sisters, Ethel Gorcyca, Sophia Poleski and Olga Derefinko; and son in-law, Arthur Butler. There will be no prior calling hours. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017 at11AM at Holy Trinity Parish/St. Mary’s Church, on Eagle Street, Medina, celebrated by the Rev. Daniel J. Fawls. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Parish, 211 Eagle St., Medina, NY 14103
