Dr. Alan R. Johnson passed away on Sunday January 29th, 2017 at the Eastern Niagara Hospital after a brief illness. Dr. Johnson was 85 years old.
He was born in Lyndonville, New York on June 25th 1931. He was predeceased by his parents Ernest and Elsie Johnson; his wife of 51 years, Florence (Nowak), two sisters Gail (Larson) and Peniual (Fitzgerald), along with three brothers David, Warren and Phillip. He is survived by his three sons Ernest E. Johnson (Linda) of Lyndonville, New York, Alan R. Johnson II (Karie) of Medina, New York and Dr. Eric R. Johnson of Brockport, New York. Dr. Johnson had eight grandchildren Dr. Alan Johnson (Lindsy), Mrs. Catlin Fuquay (Tyler), Dr. Patrick Johnson, Brian Johnson, Hannah Johnson, Martha Johnson, Catherine Johnson and Molly Johnson. Dr. Johnson had one great grandchild Clara Johnson.
Dr. Johnson was active in the Boy Scouts of America where he achieved Eagle Scout rank. He graduated from L. A. Webber High School in Lyndonville, New York in 1949. He attended Houghton College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in chemistry in 1953. After his undergraduate work Dr. Johnson matriculated at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He completed his studies in 1957, receiving his Doctorate of Medicine. Following his medical degree Dr. Johnson pursued his residency in internal medicine at the Genesee Hospital in Rochester, New York. After completion of his residency in internal medicine in 1960 Dr. Johnson established a private practice in internal medicine in Medina, New York. He maintained hospital privileges at the Arnold Gregory Hospital in Albion, New York and at the Medina Memorial Hospital in Medina, New York.
After marrying Florence H. Nowak in1954, Dr. Johnson and his wife moved to Medina, New York and eventually established a permanent residence in Lyndonville, New York from 1964 to the present day. Early in his practice Dr. Johnson provided anesthesia services for both the Medina and Albion hospitals. He is credited with performing the first endotracheal intubation in Orleans County. He was a member of the American Cancer Society and served as the local chapter president. He was a board member of the Lyndonville Central School where he served several terms as the board president. Dr. Johnson was elected to serve as the Orleans County Coroner for over ten years and served as the medical consultant for the Orleans County Board of Health for over 20 years. Dr. Johnson was the Lyndonville school physician from 1960 to 2012. He was a longstanding member of the Yates Baptist Church. He and his wife maintained a summer home on Keuka Lake and a winter residence in Jupiter, Florida. Dr. Johnson was an avid boater and enjoyed motor homing with his family. He and his family traveled extensively in the United States and Southern Canada. Dr. Johnson was involved with several entrepreneurial endeavors. He built and owned the Oak Orchard Marina, had dealerships in motorhomes and boats and was instrumental in establishing the first adult care facility in Orleans County.
Family and friends may call at the Cooper Funeral Home, 215 West Center St., Medina, New York on Thursday, February 2, 2017 between the hours of 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. There will be a funeral service Friday, February 3, 2017, commencing at 11:00 a.m. At the Yates Baptist Church in Lyndonville, New York. Interment will follow the service at the Lyn-Haven Cemetery weather permitting.
