Obituary of Kasmier R. "Mike" Szulis

Kasmier R. “Mike” Szulis, of Medina, passed away on May 15, 2017 at Strong Memorial Hospital.


Mr. Szulis was born in Kent, NY, September 6, 1926, a son of the late Thomas and Frances (Slezewski) Szulis.  A US Amy veteran, he served from 1944-46.  On October 12, 1946, he married the former Beatrice E. Whitney. 

Mr. Szulis was employed as a truck driver by the Lapp Express Company for many years and ended his career with Speed Motor Freight.   He was a longtime member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.   He was a communicant at Holy Trinity Parish/St. Mary’s Church, member and Past Grand Knight of Medina Council #651, Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Joan of Arc of Orleans Assembly, Fourth Degree.  Active with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America, Mike was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader with Troop 32.  He was a charter member of Apple Pushers, a member of the National Campers & Hikers Association, member of Butts-Clark Post #204, American Legion and volunteered with the Orleans County Joint Veterans Council Medical Van Service.  He also enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include 2 children, Mike (Judy) Szulis and Dawn (Robin) Root; 5 grandchildren, Michelle and Raymond Szulis, Renee (Todd) McQuillen, Jennifer (Chad) Forrest and Adam Root; 4 great grandchildren, Pierson and Emma McQuillen and Calista and G. Wyatt Forrest; several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his wife, Bea, on July 7, 2011.


Friends may call on Thursday (9-10) at the Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina, where prayers will be offered at 10:30 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Trinity Parish/St. Mary’s Church at 11AM. celebrated by The Rev. Daniel J. Fawls.  Military honors will be accorded at graveside at St. Mary’s Cemetery by members of Butts-Clark Post #204, American Legion and Lincoln Post #1483, VFW.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Orleans County Joint Veterans Council Medical Van Service, 13996 Route 31 W, Albion, NY  14411.
