Obituary of Wilson M. Southworth

Please share a memory of Wilson to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Wilson Main Southworth, age 70, died unexpectedly at home on December 8, 2017.

He was born on February 11, 1947 to Ardis and Betty Southworth. Spending his childhood in Lyndonville, he attended Lyndonville schools, graduating in 1965. He then attended SUNY at Brockport, receiving his BS in 1969 and Masters of Education in 1975. Wilson began his 36 year teaching career at Warren P. Towne Elementary School in Medina in 1969 and retired in 2005. He was extremely well-liked by his students, and well-respected by his colleagues. It was at Towne School that he met his future wife, Claudia Amos, in 1970 while she was student teaching. They were married on August 19, 1972.

Although Wilson was raised in Lyndonville, he became a Medina man through and through. He was easily recognized as he made his daily brisk walks around the village. His compassionate personality drew people to him and impromptu, often lengthy conversations became the norm. Wilson will be remembered by his family, friends, and associates as a selfless and caring man.

Wilson served in many capacities of village government and activities including Village Trustee, Medina Zoning Board, Medina Tree Board, Orleans County Planning Board, Glenwood Lake Commission, and Decorate Medina Committee.

Wilson is survived by his wife of 45 years, Claudia Southworth of Medina; daughter Courtney Dzialo of The Woodlands, TX; granddaughters Isabella and Ariana Dzialo (who knew they had the best Grampy two little girls could ever have) of The Woodlands, TX; brother Mark Southworth of Fort Lauderdale, FL; father-in-law Bernard Amos of Medina; sisters-in-law Cheryl Smith of Rochester, NY and Colleen Brose of Bossier City, LA; niece Stacey (Clint) Cormier and nephew Scott Scharping, both of Shreveport, LA. He was predeceased by his mother and father; mother-in-law Shirley Amos; and sister-in-law Cynthia Graham.

There will be no visitation or services. A celebration of Wilson’s life will be planned for a later date.

Memorials may be made in Wilson’s name to Medina Memorial Hospital, 200 Ohio Street, Medina, NY 14103; The Decorate Medina Committee, P.O. Box 880, Medina, NY 14103; or UNYTS (Upstate New York Transplant Services), 110 Broadway, Buffalo, NY 14203.
