Obituary of Laura M. Close
Laura M. Close, 83, of Lyndonville entered into rest on Sunday, June17, 2018 at Rochester General Hospital following a brief illness.
Laura was born on October 25, 1934 in Hemlock, NY, devoted daughter of the late Elmer and Alma Close.
She received her bachelor’s degree in education from SUNY Fredonia and shortly after, started her teaching career at Lyndonville Central School in 1959. Miss Close taught 5th grade for many years and then taught remedial math until she retired in 1994. She loved horseback riding in her younger years, playing golf and was active with the American Legion. She loved knitting and crocheting and whenever there was a baby born to someone she knew, Laura always made a newborn sweater set or blanket. Laura and Norm had several bird & squirrel feeders all around their yard which they thoroughly enjoyed watching. She could tell you about every bird, when they came, what they ate and she even had names for them! You could find her at Signature Styles with Joy every Thursday to get her hair done because she always felt better when her hair looked good. Laura had a huge heart, was very generous, thoughtful and had a great sense of humor.
She is survived by her companion of 26 years, Norman Slayer of Lyndonville. Laura was like a mother to many, but especially Norman’s children, Kelly Slayer, Shannon (JR) Turner both of Ohio, and Patrick Slayer who passed away 11/7/2014. She also leaves behind many cousins, relatives and special friends, Bonnie Nagel, the Davis family and many other close acquaintances.
A graveside committal service will be held in Lynhaven Cemetery at a later date to be announced. Arrangements were completed through Cooper Funeral Home, Medina.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Laura’s memory to the Lyndonville Fire Dept.- 148 N. Main St., Lyndonville, NY 14098.
